Japanese Writer Wins Award, Reveals She Used ChatGPT

Japanese Writer Used ChatGPT in Novel.

If used correctly, ChatGPT can assist you in achieving great success in the literary world. However, you might be wondering if it’s appropriate to use it for creating unique fiction pieces, particularly if you’re already an established writer.

This is a debatable issue, but a Japanese woman who recently won an award for her writing seems to have no qualms about using ChatGPT to write a novel. And why would she? After all, the AI chatbot is helping her win an award for her hard work.

Renowned Japanese author Rie Kudan, recipient of the renowned Akutagawa Prize, has brazenly revealed that a piece of her acclaimed work, “Tokyo-to Dojo-to,” was co-written with ChatGPT.

At a press conference, Kudan—who won the esteemed literary award for emerging writers—told reporters that ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence language model, produced about 5% of her critically acclaimed book verbatim.

This sci-fi novel, exploring AI as a theme, follows the challenges encountered by an architect given the responsibility of designing a humane high-rise prison in Tokyo, where criminals undergo treatment for their offenses.

Kudan isn’t the first to use AI in art, but it’s caused some issues. Many writers and artists, like George RR Martin, Jodi Picoult, and John Grisham, are worried about AI. They’ve even taken legal actions against OpenAI, the folks behind ChatGPT.

The Japan Times reported a swift and harsh social media reaction to the use of AI in literature, raising concerns about its impact on the future of literary awards.

The controversy stems from the use of generative AI, which is trained on extensive datasets, potentially regurgitating personal information.

Some argue that if AI generated specific book sections, it could be more acceptable. However, Kudan’s publisher remains silent on the matter.
