Starting Thursday, Apple’s App Store will allow game-streaming apps and services. The result is that services such as Xbox Cloud Streaming and GeForce Now, which were previously only available on iOS through a web browser, will now be able to provide full-featured apps.
Apple made the announcement in a blog post, stating that “developers can now submit a single app with the capability to stream all of the games offered in their catalog.”
In 2020, Apple seemed to have reserved a spot in the App Store for cloud gaming services. However, it turned out that all games available through each service had to be submitted and reviewed as a standalone app, which meant that no cloud gaming service could operate effectively.
Recently, Apple announced a significant change by allowing one app with a vast collection of games. This change is a welcome development for the gaming industry. Apple said that:
each experience made available in an app on the App Store will be required to adhere to all App Store Review Guidelines and its host app will need to maintain an age rating of the highest age-rated content included in the app.
Apple also mentioned that mini-apps, mini-games, chatbots, and plug-ins will now have access to Apple’s in-app purchase system for digital content and services on a global scale. As an illustration, Apple highlighted the ability for users to subscribe to an individual chatbot.
