Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman revealed that Apple is gearing up for a major upgrade in its future iOS 18 operating system.
In a recent Q&A section of his Power On newsletter, Gurman suggested that iOS 18 might be the most significant update in the history of Apple’s smartphones.
“” I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history””
Gurman intends to provide additional insights into the specific features and changes planned for iOS 18 in the future.
However, we are already aware of two anticipated additions expected to be part of the update, as outlined below.
In November 2023, Apple revealed plans to support RCS, a cross-platform messaging standard, in the iPhone Messages app by 2024. This means iOS 18 is likely to include RCS support, bringing improvements like better-quality photos and videos, voice messages, read receipts, Wi-Fi messaging between iPhones and Androids, and enhanced group chat features.
These upgrades, already present in iMessage for iPhone-to-iPhone chats, will now extend to conversations with Android users, narrowing the feature gap between iOS and Android.
Another anticipated feature involves a more intelligent Siri using generative artificial intelligence technology.
Apple is reportedly looking to integrate extensive language patterns into Siri, enabling users to automate intricate tasks with greater ease.
iOS 18 is set to debut in September, with developers getting an early look through the first beta at Apple’s annual WWDC in June.
