The flaw “may have been violently exploited,” according to Apple.

On Monday, Apple published security patches for its operating systems to address a security problem. While such upgrades are typical, the firm stated in the release that the bug “may have been actively exploited,” implying that hackers may have used the flaw to get access to Apple devices.

Beyond the update release notes, Apple does not have any other information on the exploits to give, according to spokesperson Scott Radcliffe.

Patches for security weaknesses exposed on Apple devices are not uncommon, but keeping devices up to date can help keep consumers safe from attack. Apple doesn’t usually release specifics about a vulnerability until a patch is publicly available. In August, the firm issued similarly time-sensitive fixes for iPad, iPhone, and macOS users.

At the time of publishing, the Citizen Lab had not replied to a request for comment.
