Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary marathon runner from Kenya, finished sixth in his debut at the Boston Marathon. He was unable to keep up with the leading pack and finished more than three minutes behind the winner, fellow Kenyan Evans Chebet.
Kipchoge, who has won two Olympic gold medals and set two world records in the marathon, was hoping to add Boston to his list of victories and become the first person to win all six of the annual World Marathon Majors.
However, the defeat raises questions about his ability to achieve this goal and win his third consecutive Olympic marathon at next year’s Paris Games. Kipchoge has yet to comment on the race or his future plans.
In the women’s race, Kenyan Hellen Obiri won in her second marathon attempt, finishing ahead of Ethiopian Amane Beriso. Emma Bates was the top American finisher in fifth place, and Susannah Scaroni and Marcel Hug won the wheelchair races.
The next major marathon in London on Sunday, featuring several top runners including women’s world record holder Brigid Kosgei, Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir, and Sifan Hassan in her marathon debut.
