We have become inseparable from our smartphone devices when assessing society’s reliance on technology. On the whole, most of us spend a good few hours a day on our modern-day phones, perhaps by updating social media statuses or conversing with friends on popular communication services like WhatsApp. Gaming is another go-to option for smartphone users of today. Mobile gaming’s popularity has reached new heights in recent times.

Providing a convenient gaming tool for users to explore as and when it suits them, the rise of new and improved mobile games and gaming phones has elevated the genre massively. Snake was the first real game to be housed on mobile phone devices, but since then, the gaming products have come on leaps and bounds. These titles and more have helped contribute to mobile gaming becoming a force of nature unto itself, with some releases registering massive success in terms of the amount of money they have managed to bring in.

Now, when looking at the gaming industry’s annual revenue, the mobile gaming category contributes a great deal to the overall number. For example, in 2020, the total yearly income was upwards of $150 billion, with mobile gaming adding a staggering $85 billion to the final figure. The improved products have undoubtedly led to more people exploring mobile gaming for themselves. From simple but hugely entertaining titles like the selection of William Hill slots online, such as Avalon Gold and Rhino Blitz, to vastly detailed console-quality titles, like PUBG Mobile and Minecraft, the options for mobile gamers have never been so extensive. These titles and more, like puzzle games and augmented reality products, have helped contribute to mobile gaming’s rise up the gaming ranks. With that in mind, let’s look at some of the highest-grossing titles ever.

Clash Royale – $3+ Billion

Created by respected developer Supercell, Clash Royale is another successful release by the Finnish company. While other games have pulled in more significant numbers, such as Clash of Clans, Clash Royale is a much-loved product thanks to its strategic nature and fast-paced gameplay. Most mobile games are designed to be picked up and put down quickly, and Clash Royale is no different.

Garena Free Fire – $3.4+ Billion

At the time of writing, battle royale masterpiece Garena Free Fire has managed to earn over $3.4 billion thanks to its 80 million daily users. The battle royale genre is generally prevalent right now, with other options, like PUBG Mobile, recording even more success. Garena Free Fire’s earnings have been dwarfed by a humongous $6.2 billion from PUBG. Still, Garena Free Fire is a go-to favorite for many mobile gamers, particularly in parts of Asia.

Candy Crush Saga – $6.4+ Billion

Since its initial release in 2012, Candy Crush Saga has continually evolved to stay relevant among today’s new and improved games. While the game’s premise has always remained the same, enhanced graphics and an overall crisper feel, have brought in more than $6.4 billion at the time of writing.

Honor Of Kings/Arena Of Valor – $11+ Billion

Brought to life by gaming giant Tencent, Arena of Valor is an international adaptation of Honor of Kings, smashing the global market and bringing in over $11 billion for the Chinese company. MOBA gamers adore both titles.

The mobile game industry has seen a massive turnout of revenue in recent years, with some games grossing billions of dollars. Pokemon Go is one of the top-grossing mobile games, having grossed over $7.2 billion. The game has become a cultural phenomenon since its release in 2016, with millions of players worldwide. Clash of Clans and Monster Strike are also among the top-grossing mobile games, having generated over $7.7 billion and $9.6 billion, respectively. Pokemon Go accounts for a significant portion of the Pokemon franchise’s mobile revenue, which has brought in $2.5 billion on mobile alone. The game’s success has continued, with Pokemon Go earning $1.8 billion worldwide since its launch. Pokemon Go has grossed $2.65 billion worldwide since launching in 2016, according to Sensor Tower Store Intelligence estimates. These figures show that Pokemon Go accounts for a significant portion of the mobile gaming industry’s revenue and is one of the most successful mobile games of all time.
