Apple has published a new firmware update for its AirTag item trackers, with an upgraded version number of 2A36, up from the 2A24e firmware that Apple began issuing in November. When you install the update, you will see the version number 2.0.36.
There’s no indication on what’s in the update yet, but Apple may release a support document with further information.
It is not feasible to force an AirTag update because it is done over-the-air through a linked iPhone. You may place your AirTag in range of your iPhone to ensure the update occurs, but you must wait for the firmware to be rolled out to your smartphone. You may verify your current AirTag firmware version using the Find My app, as detailed in our how to.
Surprisingly, Apple began pushing out the previous 2A24e AirTags firmware in November, but halted the upgrade before the complete rollout. That version has been replaced by the new firmware issued today.
