Real Madrid beat Chelsea 2-0 in their Champions League quarterfinal first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. Chelsea started strong, but Madrid grew into the game and took the lead through Karim Benzema just after 20 minutes.
Chelsea was reduced to ten men after Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red card for bringing down Rodrygo. Madrid dominated the game and Marco Asensio scored the second goal minutes after coming on as a substitute. Vinicius Junior notched two assists to take his total goal contributions to 11 in European competition this season, second-most behind Erling Haaland’s 12.
Chelsea failed to score for a fourth match in a row, their longest barren run since 1993. Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti said that the job was far from done despite the win and that they would have to fight for another 90 minutes in the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
