After a 7-month ban, X is finally back online in Pakistan! The ban started in February 2o24 due to election fraud allegations, but the government has now lifted the ban and the microblogging website is accessible without a VPN.
A lawyer from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) told the Sindh High Court that the original request to block X has been withdrawn.
Although the ban is lifted but it is still not clear that if this free access will be permanent or if there could be another ban in the future. The court adjourned the hearing regarding X’s closure for two weeks.
During the February elections, the people of Pakistan faced major issues with social media access, with a full internet shutdown on election day, which officials said was for terrorism prevention. These disruptions sparked concerns about possible violations of citizens’ rights to information and free speech.
For now, it’s possible to access X in Pakistan without needing a VPN. Let’s hope this signifies more stability ahead!
